Scripture reading: “In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” —1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NKJV)
Choosing gratitude during difficult times doesn’t come naturally. We often feel thankful only when things go our way. However, the message of this Scripture is clear: God’s will for us is to give thanks in every circumstance, no matter how challenging.
Jesus, our ultimate example, showed us how to be thankful even in hard times. At the Last Supper, He gave thanks before facing the agony of the crucifixion. He thanked God when feeding the 5,000, despite the scarcity of food. Even at Lazarus’ tomb, amidst grief, He expressed thanks.
These moments teach us that we can choose to thank God even when we don’t feel grateful for our circumstances. Pain, loss, or need don’t have to rob us of our gratitude. When we choose to rejoice, we shift our focus from what we lack to God’s goodness. This attitude of gratitude keeps our hearts humble, draws us closer to God, and invites His peace into our lives.
Our joy is found in what is eternal, not temporary. By remembering God’s promises, we can find joy and thanksgiving in any situation.
Challenge: Take time today to thank God for both the highs and lows of your journey with Him. Reflect on His faithfulness and rejoice in who He is.
