Day 5 – MY WORK, A PART OF GOD’S WORK IN THE EARTH

Bible reading: Matthew 5: 14 – 16

As Christians we sometimes wonder how we can make impact in our world outside the four walls of our church building. If you’re like me, a software engineer, you may sometimes find yourself in a tussle to see how what you do on a daily basis can really impact our immediate environment.

You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Matthew 5: 14

Jesus speaks directly to us believers saying, we are the light of the world.

Now, a few things to note: he doesn’t say we are just the light of our church, or the light of just our home or some locality, but the entire world! Friend, we are given a mandate to shine as light everywhere we go, as representatives of Jesus.

Also notice that Jesus says “You” addressing all his disciples- meaning Christians everywhere, in all spheres and from all works of life, not some part but all. I feel for emphasis, it’s worthy of a double mention- From all works of life! Isn’t that fantastic? God cares about our work (what our hands finds to do) because it’s one of the ways he reveals himself especially to the lost in a fallen world.

Just in case you are thinking, “I don’t have a job, I don’t work in church, I’m not doing anything at the moment, what work have I got to express God’s light to my world?”. Can I encourage you today that all of our daily living is work, and God is very much interested in all the expressions that we get to live out on a daily basis.

Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lamp stand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.  Matthew 5: 15-16

God wants us to shine our light (His light in us) through our works. Verse 16 clearly says “good works”, which expresses the type of work that God is big on (works of righteousness), and in the end, the main goal is to draw everyone to Jesus.

So I encourage you to go out there, whether you’re an entrepreneur, artisan, student, stay at home mom, employee, corp member or you teach in a school, church, or you are in the waiting, there’s always a work of drawing people to Jesus through the expressions of our everyday living.

So let’s keep working. Even if you are out of job, you should never be out of the work of drawing people to Jesus!

Something To Pray
Let’s thank God for putting the work of ministering his word and showing his light through our work and our lives.
Let’s ask that God will reveal himself through us, and through our work.
