Bible Reading: James 2:14-26
My wife and I did a monthly registration at a gym sometime last year. Sorry, take that back. My wife and I did some charity donation sometime last year. We could have as well rather added the registration money to our offerings in church. Well, we used 2 or 3 days out of the month.
Here’s what I learnt: Walking into that room and seeing all the equipment- the tread mills, the exercise bikes, sit up benches, dumbbells, the strength equipments, and so on- that doesn’t make you lose weight.
Okay, let me shake a similar table- signing up to join a Caleb life group in itself doesn’t reduce your weight.
Gyms don’t lose weight! It is hardworking people lose weight through the instrumentality of gyms.
Reading through the words of James today, I think he brings us a very practical picture of how the highlight of the story of what God is doing cannot merely be the opportunities, access and empowerment that we have, but it must boil down to what we do with it.
Our faith brings us into God’s beautiful and loaded gym. It signifies the opportunity for what can happen. It is a huge statement of what God intends to happen and how he has made the provision for it. It is the blessing of access to make things happen.
But we’ve got to work it out.
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, WORK OUT your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who WORKS IN YOU both to will and to do for His good pleasure. Philippians 2:12-13 NKJV
We work out what God works in us.
As you think about God doing a new thing and the power of the new in this season, do you realize that God will work in us new strength, work around us new opportunities, new access, new things to do, so that we can take advantage and work it out.
Do you see yourself like someone thrown into a gym and needing to consistently and diligently work out the possibilities that are locked up in the equipment.
For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God PREPARED IN ADVANCE so that we would walk in them. Ephesians 2:10 EHV
What kind of vibe are you putting up in your purpose gym today? The spirit of the new is a hands-on, get-to-work vibe. It is not a lazing around, do-anyhow kind of vibe.
That you are the son of the gym owner will not in itself give you your weight loss or fitness targets. That the gym owner loves you so dearly will not insert muscles on your body. The love of the gym owner to you will rather translate to things like you being able to get the key anytime you want so that you can do all the work that you need to do. It will translate to you being handed an energy drink and encouragement so that you can continue to do the work that you need to do.
Grace is not a justification for laziness. Its is an empowerment to do all our work even better.
Let this season and the awareness of God doing something new come with a very strong burden on us to do something more. Let’s put in the work of getting our devotion to God and spiritual disciplines at the level it should be , let’s put in the best work we can in the things of serving God and investing in the lives of others through the house of God, and let’s put in the work of investing in our secular endeavours at a level of utmost diligence.
…That the Lord your God may bless you in all the WORK OF YOUR HANDS Deuturonomy 24:19 NKJV
I would love to know in the comments section something that you particularly want to look out to do this month (or to do better and more diligently) that you’re trusting God to bless for you as you do it. I would love to be praying for you!
