Bible Reading: James 3
You’ve probably encountered a little big detail in life: Perhaps you finished writing a 3 hour exam with your fancy blue pen before noticing that in the instructions, you were asked to write with black ink. Little big detail.
Or when you’ve fallen in love, gotten soaked and drenched in it, and as you were swimming along in the rivers of love, you remember to ask for her genotype. Little big thing.
The little big details make a world of difference.
Today, James challenges us about seeing the seemingly little things for what they are and winning with them.
He writes about our little tongue and the great power it has in our lives.
Even so the tongue is a little member and boasts great things James 3:5 NKV
James encouragement is for us not to to be the sort of people that overlook the tongue because it’s little. We must recognise it in the full weight of its potential. It can destroy our lives. It can set our lives right. We can destroy the world around and about us. Or we can fill it with life.
Is the use of your tongue a deliberate thing for you? I know there’s the whole narrative of working hard not to say the wrong things, and that’s something good. But do you deliberately say the right things? Are you using your words in the best possible narrative?
Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me 2 Timothy 1:13 NKJV
What I mean is that I don’t just want to avoid saying words that discourage people- I want to actually deliberately say words that encourage people. I don’t just want to avoid cursing and swearing, I want to actively be blessing. I don’t just want to say that I wont hurt my spouse and children with my words, I want to be consciously building them.
I’m sure if James was writing today, he would tell you ‘words’ there includes your social media and status updates and all that.
How’s it going for you with your words? Are you building a safety in saying that you’re not destroying, or are you taking the challenge to be building?
I’d love to know in the comments what you want to deliberately go for with your words this month?
Being more deliberate about encouraging?
Being more deliberate about appreciating?
Being more deliberate about confessing God’s word over your life?
Being more deliberate about speaking hope? Etc.
For me, I want to more consciously let people around me know what they’re doing right, and not just what they do wrong. I also want to rake more opportunities to share my faith.
