Day 2- Right Pathways: Secret to a Good and Satisfying Life

Bible Reading: Proverbs 3:1-12

When I was much younger, I used to imagine angels bringing money to our house so that all the money problems that we had will disappear. If you asked me then about what a good life was, it was more about money than anything else.

What does a good life mean to you? No money worries? Riding the latest car? Having a perfect family? Security? Peace? Healing? If I can get into your mind right now, what will be your answer?

I really think that a good life is more about a pathway than a destination or imagination that we have in mind. In other words, we don’t just wake up to a good and fulfilling life. There are choices we have to be making and pathways we have to walk in. It’s only the right pathways that take us to the right destinations. A wrong pathway can never take you to a right destination.

My son, don’t forget my teaching. Remember what I tell you to do.
What I teach will give you a good, long life, and all will go well for you. Proverbs 3:1-2 ERV

My child, if you truly want a long and satisfying life, never forget the things that I’ve taught you. Follow closely every truth that I’ve given you. Then you will have a full, rewarding life. Proverbs 3:1-2 TPT

Simply put, a good life begins with remembering God’s instructions and following closely every truth of His word. To follow closely means to go after or pursue someone or something intently. So, If I could paraphrase that scripture, it means to make the right choices to remember God’s words and walk in the right pathways of these instructions. Let’s consider some of these pathways together:

1. A Pathway of Love and Loyalty.

Don’t ever let love and loyalty leave you. Tie them around your neck, and write them on your heart. Then God will be pleased and think well of you and so will everyone else. Proverbs 3:3-4 ERV

God calls us to walk on a path of love and loyalty for a full rewarding life. He first loved us and showed us this example of love by giving us his son. He then calls us to follow His example closely and walk in love. To love Him with all our heart, mind and soul…love so loyal that we aren’t holding anything back. Look friends, a full life starts from an emptied life, surrendered at the feet of the master. Don’t hold anything back. Think about it, before you have a full cup of water, milk or juice, the glass first has to be empty. You don’t fill a full cup. So, to have a full and satisfying life, would you empty yourself and pour out yourself in love for the master, His people and His house? Would you choose to walk on a pathway of love today despite the hatred and bitterness in the world? I know it’s not the easiest thing to do, but friends it wasn’t easy for Jesus too. And if He loved us, we can love Him and others.

2. A Pathway of Trust

Trust the Lord completely, and don’t depend on your own knowledge. With every step you take, think about what he wants, and he will help you go the right way. Proverbs 3:5-6 ERV

Another pathway that God calls us to is one of complete trust in Him, in His will, His plans and His purpose. To be honest, friends, we can never live a satisfying life when we are so filled with worry and anxiety. God’s spirit gives us a sound mind and not a fearful one. He calls us to trust, to depend and rely on Him. Jesus had to trust God even when it seemed He was forsaken at the cross. He trusted God and committed His life into the Father’s hand.

May we follow Jesus’ example of trust closely as we walk our journey.

If you do this, it will be like a refreshing drink and medicine for your body. Proverbs 3:8 ERV

Maybe somewhere in your mind, you have been waiting for the part where we will talk about money and prosperity as we talk about having a good life because what’s a good life without money, right? Well, here we are:

3. A Pathway of Honour
Honour the Lord with your wealth and the first part of your harvest. Then your barns will be full of grain, and your barrels will be overflowing with wine. Proverbs 3:9-10 ERV

God calls us to walk in a pathway of honour. One of the instructions He calls us to remember is generosity, which must come from the fact that we acknowledge Him as our source and out of that, we give our first and best to Him. So, here’s a little secret to a satisfying and prosperous life: honour God with your wealth, be faithful with what He has given to you. Look at that scripture again. It’s God’s words and God fulfils His promise when we honour Him.

4. A Pathway of Wisdom

God wants us to walk a pathway of wisdom.

Wisdom will lead you to a life of joy and peace. Proverbs 3:17 ERV

God’s spirit in us is the spirit of wisdom and as we live our lives, He wants to lead us if we allow Him. Wisdom will tell us never to walk in the pathways of destruction. He will warn us to keep away from the company of wrong people. You can’t be on a journey to a good, long, satisfying life and be walking with ungodly people. There are pathways never to walk in, friends. We don’t walk on the pathways of sin. There are things we don’t do…but there are things that we do. We follow closely on the paths of God’s truth.

Would you make a deliberate decision to embrace every truth of God’s word today and walk in it? Don’t analyse truth, instead believe it. And if you are ever overwhelmed with living out the truth even when you believe it, or you are overwhelmed following Him closely when you desire to, never forget that we have His Spirit to help and empower us to live the life He has called us to and walk on the pathways of life. You are never alone. You have God’s help. You have His spirit.

Something to Pray: Pray for an empowerment to obey God’s instructions as He calls you to more and for grace to walk in His pathways.
