Bible Reading: Proverbs 8
Were you ever called foolish in your growing up years?
In my context, it was like a stab- a stab right in the heart. It hurt terribly. And to be honest, it really didn’t matter whether the allegation was grounded or not.
Why would I be thought of as foolish?
I felt like I would want to walk the dark lonely streets and cry out into the night ‘where is wisdom?! Where are you hiding?! Wisdom, I need you!’ I felt like I was willing to do whatever it would take to have wisdom.
But today’s reading is quite interesting to me, because it paints a picture of quite the opposite happening!
Wisdom is actually the one walking the streets and crying out for people:
Does not wisdom cry out,
And understanding lift up her voice?
She cries out by the gates, at the entry of the city,
At the entrance of the doors:
“To you, O men, I call,
And my voice is to the sons of men.
Proverbs 8:1, 3-4 NKJV
The Bible shows that wisdom isn’t some scarce, mysterious, get-me-if-you-can thing. Wisdom is right within our reach.
I’ve seen people present and market themselves to you and the terrible mistake you’ll make is taking them at their word. Heavy and brilliant CV’s but empty people. Great adverts, useless products.
It’s called ‘packaging’.
But the Bible isn’t presenting wisdom in some fanfare that lacks substance. Wisdom boasts an incredible CV! Catch a glance at some of what wisdom can do for you and some of the beautiful words associated with wisdom:
Wisdom teaches prudence (v5, 12) inclines to excellence ( v 6), Shows what’s right (v 6), upholds truth (v 7), leads in righteousness (v 8, 18, 20), simplicity (v 9), discretion (v 12), counsel (v 14), strength (v 14), justice (v 15, 20), riches (v 18), honour (v 18), endurance (v 18), wealth (v 21), stirs an atmosphere of rejoicing (v 30), gives instruction (v 33)
This feels like one of those too-good-to-be-true adverts! Why would I get all of this and you’re the one crying out for me?!
But friends, that’s the reality of our generous God! He freely offers us wisdom to live with! If we sit in folly or live our lives outside of all the blessings of wisdom, it’s because we didn’t take on God’s generous offer.
I’m glad that we’re going to share the next seven days in this Surge journey, because I believe it represents a surge in the wisdom of God in and for our lives.
Blessed is the man who listens to me,
Watching daily at my gates,
Waiting at the posts of my doors.
For whoever finds me finds life,
And obtains favor from the Lord;
Proverbs 8:34-35 NKJV
That’s what we want to do! To watch daily at the gates of wisdom by studying God’s word together. The book of 1 Timothy which we’ll be studying together contains such exciting and practical wisdom to do life with!
Let’s look over the CV of wisdom again, and all those beautiful words associated with it:
Wisdom teaches prudence (v5, 12) inclines to excellence ( v 6), Shows what’s right (v 6) , upholds truth (v 7), leads in righteousness (v 8, 18, 20), simplicity (v 9), discretion (v 12), counsel (v 14), strength (v 14), justice (v 15, 20), riches (v 18), honour (v 18), endurance (v 18), wealth (v 21), stirs an atmosphere of rejoicing (v 30), gives instruction (v 33)
What strikes you the most on the list? Write out in the comments section below one or two things that you feel like you can do with some more of it over the next seven days and then get ready and expectant for it!
Something to Pray
And if anyone longs to be wise, ask God for wisdom and he will give it! He won’t see your lack of wisdom as an opportunity to scold you over your failures but he will overwhelm your failures with his generous grace. James 1:5 TPT
Would you pray today asking God for a surge in wisdom in your life in this season.
